What is OCD?
Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health disorder that affects people of all ages and walks of life, and occurs when a person gets caught in a cycle of obsessions and compulsions. Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive thoughts, images or urges that trigger intensely distressing feelings. Compulsions are behaviors an individual engages in to attempt to get rid of the obsessions and/or decrease his or her distress.
Many people have obsessive thoughts over their lives and that does not mean they have OCD. For those with OCD in fact, the obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviors can become so extreme that it affects their daily lives. There is still no exact answer as to what causes OCD.
How Hypnosis Works for OCD
The good news is hypnosis works for OCD. I recently had a case of a 14-year-old boy we will call Johnny for this article. Johnny had been diagnosed with OCD since he was a young child. Some of his symptoms where under control. Then, within a 13 month period he had been struck by a car while out riding his bicycle and also saw the scene of a horrific motorcycle accident where he saw his uncle laying on the ground dead. These two recent traumatic events reignited his OCD symptoms as well as gave him increased anxiety and depression with crippling OCD.
Due to all of this, he had stopped going to school and stopped participating in sports and would sleep often up to 14 hours in a day.
His mother had taken him to different psychiatrists and psychologists and had him on many medications to control the OCD, depression and anxiety. However, nothing was working and the boy continued to suffer.
His mother then contacted me and we scheduled the appointment. I spoke with the boy by phone to be sure he was interested in changing his behaviors and feeling better. He was very excited to meet me and get on with the hypnosis.
Achieving Results
I had buy-in from him which is a very important factor of change. I advised the boy I was not interested in hearing his story as he had told it to so many other professionals and obviously telling his story and acknowledging the problem was not getting rid of it. I asked him if the OCD and stress and anxiety had any usefulness in his life. He said no. I told him we were going to put his conscious mind on hold and speak directly to his subconscious where the change would take place.
His mother sat and watched as her son went into a very deep hypnotic trance. She sat in amazement as I spoke directly to his unconscious mind. At the end his eyes sprang open and he said, “It’s gone!” “This is bullshit, I have suffered so long!” His mother has since worked with his doctors to get him off medications and this young man is playing football again and focusing on living instead of dying.
