If you’re one of the millions of Americans who suffer from sleep apnea, you know frustrating and damaging the condition can be. Not only does it ruin your ability to get a good night’s sleep and harm your overall health, treating it often requires a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machine to treat. CPAP machines can be uncomfortable to wear during sleep, and many people have trouble getting used to them.

Luckily, hypnosis can help!

Keep reading to learn more.

What Is Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes breathing to stop or become very shallow regularly during sleep. Usually this is caused by the airway closing up during sleep, due to overrelaxation of the muscles, obesity, or other factors.

The long term effects of Sleep Apnea are very dangerous.

Some of the symptoms are:

  • loud snoring
  • tired upon awakening
  • falling asleep easy when watching TV
  • weight gain
  • frequent nocturnal urination
  • high blood pressure
  • type 2 diabetes
  • early impotence
  • even stroke and heart attack.

One of the main reasons for the high numbers of people with Sleep Apnea is because most Americans are at least 25 to 30 pounds overweight if not more. Weight gain and neck size are two of the biggest factors in having Sleep Apnea. If your neck size is 17 inches, or larger, and you snore chances are you have Sleep Apnea.

It is also hereditary.

It is difficult to loose weight when you have Sleep Apnea.

Why?

Because when you have Sleep Apnea you produce a hormone called Cortisol. Cortisol creates belly fat and does not allow the body to loose fat. When you produce more Cortisol you produce more belly fat and by producing more belly fat your Sleep Apnea gets worse and in turn creates more Cortisol. You find yourself on a never ending cycle of gaining weight, which in turn makes your Sleep Apnea worse.

When you are diagnosed with Sleep Apnea through a sleep study you have to wear a device called a CPAP machine.

This machine allows you to breath normally while sleeping. Many people complain about having to where the mask and often complain of being claustrophobic and often unable to get used to wearing a mask over their face.

How Hypnosis Can Help with Sleep Apnea

While hypnosis can’t cure sleep apnea on its own, it can help those suffering from sleep apnea in significant ways.

Hypnosis Can Help You Tolerate Your CPAP Machine

If you suffer from sleep apnea and need a CPAP mask to treat it, you might find yourself unable to sleep while wearing the mask. This will leave you just as tired and groggy in the morning as if you didn’t treat your apnea at all!

Hypnosis can help you move past your feelings of discomfort, and get a good night’s rest while wearing your CPAP mask. This is done by teaching mindfulness to reduce anxiety, promote restfulness, and encourage the subconscious mind to associate the mask with sleep.

Hypnosis Can Help You Lose Weight

There are no “silver bullets” when it comes to weight loss, but hypnotherapy techniques like virtual gastric band hypnosis have been shown to help people eat less, get more exercise, and slim down in the process. Since many cases of sleep apnea are caused by being overweight (or exacerbate it) this can indirectly help to deal with the condition.
